Wander through famous Soho, at one time the King's personal hunting grounds. And Oxford Street, London's famous shopping district, which was also the traditional route for criminals headed to the gallows at Marble Arch.
What to look out for on the way
After The Dog & Duck(1) and The Three Greyhounds(2), make your way to the The Tottenham(3) via Soho Square. The Square has been a central garden since 1681 and two of the original houses, No. 10 and No. 15, still stand today. St. Patrick's, the large Roman Catholic church on the eastern side, is rumoured to house extensive catacombs that spread out under the Square and beyond.
Rathbone Place, leading up to The Black Horse(4) and The Marquis of Granby W1(5), has been home to many famous names, including the artist John Constable, who once lived at number 50.
As Goodge Street turns into Wigmore Street a little later on in your journey, look out for Wigmore Hall, a well known concert venue and the world-famous Harley Street, with its many clinics, on your right.
The Pontefract Castle(6) is your next destination followed by a stroll along Oxford Street. At this point it might interest you to know that in the 12th century Oxford Street was probably known as 'Tyburn Road', after the River Tyburn which today runs deep beneath the ground under your feet.
The Argyll Arms(7) is next door to Oxford Circus tube station, which was first built in 1900 and whose current exits were at one time the old station buildings. Near The Clachan(8) and The White Horse(9) is Carnaby Street, home to the Swinging Sixties. Here, you might also want to check out Broadwick Street, where you can see a replica of the water pump famously sealed up by Jon Snow, a British doctor, to stop a cholera outbreak in 1854.
However many times you've already stopped off along the way, we recommend reflecting on all you’ve seen at the last pub on the trail, The Crown(10). Here too, you can sit back and enjoy a fine pint of ale in a pub that, perhaps quite aptly, is located on Brewer Street.
