The Pontefract Castle

The Pontefract Castle stands in the area known as Marylebone, close to the old village of that name. The name Marylebone derives from the parish church of St. Mary and from the River Tyburn that runs in a culvert within yards of our pub, hence St. Mary-by-the-Bourne. Step out of the pub and you will see how Wigmore Street dips down into the valley of the river. Most local streets recall the names of the descendants of one wealthy family who have owned most of this area since 1711. At least they've never been far from a decent pint of real ale.
